| A few years ago, I planted spring bulbs in a rather large area of my lawn that had previously been quite weedy. The tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths look absolutely gorgeous in the spring, but once they are done flowering, I just have dead stalks there and the weeds (dandelions and crabgrass mostly) tend to take over. Do you have any suggestions for other plants (probably perennials) that I could place in amongst the bulbs to fill in so that the flower bed would look pretty all summer as well as all spring? |
| There are a number of different perennials you could try. Daylilies (Hemerocallis) are a traditional accompaniment to spring bulbs. You might also experiment with sedums of different types as well as ajuga (a traditional groundcover) and possibly ceratostigma (also called plumbago, this one emerges very late after the bulbs are finished.) Your local professionally trained nurseryman may also have suggestions based on a more detailed understanding of the planting area and your overall design goals.
