English cucumbers must be grown in a greenhouse to prevent cross-pollination of the flowers, which would cause changes in the shape and taste of the cukes. English cucumbers are the mildest flavored cucumbers available; growing them outdoors would defeatthe purpose of growing them for their flavor. Cucumber vines need to sprawl - 25 feet is the usual distance they grow out from the center of the plant, so a planter box might not be enough for them, unless you plan to provide a trellis for them to climb.
