It's exciting to have a blank canvas on which to create your own personal outdoor rooms! Start by determining how much foot traffic your paths will be getting and choose your material based upon that. Lots of traffic? Use a sturdy material such as flagstone or pebbles. Only occasional traffic? Bark chips work well. There are literally dozens of materials available so check out the garden center of your local Home Depot for ideas. As for plants, your choice will be limited only by exposure to sunshine. Try to find sun lovers for the sunniest spots in your landscape and shade lovers for the shadiest spots. A really helpful website is Monrovia Nursery (www.monrovia.com) where you can enter the criteria and their database will provide a list of possibilities. After you've made a list of plants you might be interested in, take the list to local nurseries to see the plants in person. I'll bet you'll end up with just the perfect plants for your new landscape.

Enjoy the process!
