| Hosta foliage can brown at the tips if the plants are grown in too much sun and/or the soil is allowed to dry out. Hostas are shade loving plants and do well in morning sun or dappled light all day or even shadier sites than that. Avoid full sun or a spot with afternoon sun. The soil should be kept evenly moist yet well drained, meaning damp like a wrung out sponge. Adding organic matter before planting and then mulching with several inches of organic mulch will help keep the soil more evenly moist. Water deeply during extended dry spells. Finally, frost damage can also cause browning that may not become evident until midsummer.
