Answer: There are many "greens" that can be sown in midsummer and harvest as a fall crop. Try escarole and radicchio. If planted in a time staggered fashion, (plant first crop in early spring, follow with a planting every two weeks into the fall) you can harvest lettuces from spring to fall. Spinach can also be planted in late summer and harvest into late fall. Scallions can also be sown in the summer for a fall harvest. Regarding tomato and pepper suggestions, I would recommend both a determinate and an indeterminate tomato. For determinate, consider 'Sweet Tangerine', for indeterminate consider 'Burpee's Early Pick' (for an early crop), 'Burpee's Supersteak Hybrid' (for big meaty tomatoes) and 'Big Beef' (for a tasty, heavy yield). For bell peppers, I like 'Great Stuff Hybrid' and 'Gypsy Hybrid'. Consider also planting some garlic in the fall for harvest in the summer.
