What is a good plant to put in front of a tall block fence (wall) to hide it? It has a southern exposure (full sun). I have trellises already in the ground. I would like a fast growing plant that is hardy and pretty. |
There aren't alot of evergreen vine choices that take our intense heat against a southern wall. It also depends on how much space there is. Bougainvillea branches grow 15 to 20 feet tall and wide and have thorns, so they need alot of room so they can grow without pruning back. Then, they will bloom almost year around with great color. They are frost-tender at 28 degrees, but bounce back in spring. (Don't use this past winter as a guide. It was abnormally cold.) Other evergreen choices would be: lilac vine, also called snail vine, lady bank's rose (no thorns), and catclaw vine, which attaches itself to walls and can damage paint surface over time. Semi-evergreen choices are yellow orchid vine (Mascagnia macroptera), Baja passion vine, and pink trumpet vine. The trumpet vine needs really strong support as it gets heavy. Good luck! |
