I'm landscaping an area that is shady all day long. What type of tropical plants can I use to brighten up the area?

There are many plants you could use, but they will not be winter hardy for you. You could use typical houseplants with variegated foliage such as sanseviera and pothos, and plants with interesting leaf textures such as asparagus fern, cut leaf philodendron and papyrus. You could also use caladiums and taro and save the tubers from year to year. Additional colorful plants to consider would include perilla, coleus, and impatiens. Although not tropical, large hostas and ferns would also be great additions for a tropical looking garden area. I hope this gives you some ideas.
