Hi.. I have some very very old p rivet bushes. They are about 6-8 feet tall. When can I safely cut them back to 4 feet tall?
Can I cut off 4 feet all at once or must I do it in stages?
When can I safely cut them?
I am in zone 5. Is it too late to trim them now... that is, will I be cutting off the new spring buds?

Should I wait til fall? Thanks, Dorian

Privets are often used as hedges or formed into topiary because they can take alot of pruning. If you need to reduce the height or rejuvenate the bushes, cut them back. Thereafer, trim them lightly several times during the growing season to promote bushiness and keep them at the height you want.
