I am new to gardening and want to plant new flowers in my flower bed. This bed gets afternoon sun and we have hot summers. What should I plant?

You will need to use flowers that can tolerate heat and full sun. Some to consider would include roses with good disease resistance such as the Knock Out series, along with purple coneflower, black eyed Susan, sedum, phlox paniculata "David" and daylilies (Hemerocallis.) You may want to visit some area gardens this summer and see what else you would like to add later, but these would give you a good start. Enjoy your new garden!
