The Q&A Archives: What fertilizer should I add to freshly tilled soil for planning flower bulbs?

Question: What fertilizer (if any) should I add to freshly tilled soil in preparation for planting bulbs?

Answer: You could work in some good quality compost along with some general purpose slow release granular fertilizer with an analysis such as 10-10-10. Read and follow the label directions for how much to use. If you are not planting for another month or so, wait and add the fertilizer at planting time. Work it into the soil around each planting hole so it is not in direct contact with the bulbs.
