| I want to redo an area that's not looking so pretty anymore and I would need to transplant a quince, daffodils, and daylilies that are just now coming up. When would be the best time to do this? The quince and daffodils are in bloom now. How do I go about making sure the plants survive the transplant? Thank you in advance for your response. |
| You can move the daffodils even while they are in bloom if you dig up a very large generous large rootball for each bulb and replant right away at the same depth as they have been growing. This can be difficult if they are growing in large clumps. It is easier to move daffodils after the foliage dies back in early summer. Dig and replant immediately, or store the bulbs and replant in the fall. The daylilies can be moved now. You can also divide them at the same time if you wish. The quince would be better moved in very early spring or in the fall. However, you could move it now if you water it well the day before you move it, dig it with a very large rootball -- several feet across -- and replant immediately. If it is a large shrub it will be very heavy so you may need help to move it. Replant right away. Water deeply, mulch, and keep the soil slightly moist all season through the fall just as you would for any new plant. If you lose many roots when you dig it, you should trim back the top proportionately to compensate. Good luck with the transplanting! |
