We just planted white pines and maples, what is the best mulch to use around the base? Something enviromentally good.

The best mulch would be something organic. You could use shredded bark, pine fines, pine nuggets, or chopped, rotted down leaves from last fall, or half finished compost for example. Place it in a layer two to three inches thick over the root area, spread it in a flat layer and do not allow it to touch the trunk of the tree. Enjoy your new trees!
