what does it mean when the label says the plant needs sun to shade?- can it be outside in the shade most of the day, with some sun?- needs adaquate humidity...

Rachel,

Sun to shade means that it can take full sun or part shade or lots of shade. Few plants do equally well in all such locations so my suggestion for such a plant would be about 6 hours or so of sun (maybe less) with shade the remainder of the day. However if the label reads as you indicated it could take more or less sun than this.
