What is the best way to apply compost to your garden other than digging trenches in your garden and planting over them. Do you just place it on top or should you mix it with the soil?

To get the most from your compost - or any organic matter - put a four to six inch layer over the top of your garden bed and then till it in (or mix it in with a shovel). The organic matter will help hold nutrients and moisture, plus make it easier for the plant's roots to penetrate deeply. You can plant your garden and, after the seedlings are up and growing, mulch the top of the soil to protect it from drying out too quickly. A mulch on top of the soil will also help keep weeds from growing and competing with your crops.
