| I have several large sinks I plan to use as flower pots. They are 4 1/2 feet in diameter and 8 inches deep. There is a 4-inch drain in the center. Should I drill more drain holes? Do I need rocks on the bottom for drainage? What type of soil mix should I use and can I leave the soil in it in the winter? |
| You'd be surprised at how many interesting flower pots are in people's yards! Your sinks will be quite functional. I'd but a papertowel or other porous material over the hole before filling it with potting soil - just to keep it from falling out of the hole. There should be adequate drainage, so additional holes won't be necessary. If these sinks are made of cast iron and porcelain, empty them at the end of the growing season, as the expansion and contraction caused by the freezing and thawing of moist soil will put a lot of stress on the structure, and may eventually cause cracks.
