The Q&A Archives: Tree options

Question: I would like to plant a tree alongside my house. It will be completely in the shade at all times and needs to stay rather small when fully grown since it is right next to the house. I like Japanese style trees but what other options do I have for Zone 5.

Answer: Japanese maples are a good choice for the area, as are Cornus alternifolia (pagoda dogwood), which grows 15-25?; and Hamamelis Witchhazel (6-10?) with yellow flowers in March. Of the maples, I'd recommend Acer buergeranum, Acer griseum, Acer palmatum, A. palmatum dissectum, Acer tataricumginnala, Acer triflorum, Acer truncatum, and Acer platanoide.

Best wishes with your new tree!
