I was in the Home Depot last week and saw a very interesting plant with fan shaped leaves. It was labled Washigton Palm and looked quite tropical, and also looked as though it might grow to be quite large. Is it hardy in my zone (5b-6)? If not, why would you be selling it here in Rhode Island. I would like to buy it but am afraid that it would just die here or get far too large. Can you give me more info?

Washington Palm or Washingtonia is actually a large growing palm tree. It would not be winter hardy in Rhode Island, no. However some gardeners enjoy tropical plants as patio specimens and either replace them every year or bring them indoors each winter.
