how to protect my maple tree from worms

Without knowing exactly which pest you're dealing with, it's difficult to make a control recommendation. As a rule, the botanical Bt (Bacillus thuringensis) will kill larvae. You can spray your tree with Bt and it should take care of the worm like critters you're finding.
