| There are only a few reasons for your tree not to flower each spring. The first is pruning. Most crabapple trees do not require pruning but if you have been pruning, you may be inadvertantly cutting off the flower buds for the following spring's display. A second possible reason is drought. During the normal course of events your tree will flower and then leaf out and set buds for next year's flowers. If it does not receive adequate water during this time, it can fail to set buds. A final possibility is excessive nitrogen fertilizer. If you've been faithfully fertilizing your tree, or if it is growing in or near a lawn, it could be getting too much fertilizer. Excessive nitrogen fertilizer can promote lush, green foliage, at the expense of flowers. Hope the above information helps you determine just why your tree isn't flowering. |
