Both lilacs and hydrangeas will grow well in your gardening region. Lilacs need full sunshine; hydrangeas will appreciate afternoon shade. You'll have the best flower display from August Beauty hydrangea. This plant produces flowers on new growth, so if the shrub freezes all the way down to the ground each winter, you'll still have lots of flowers.
