We're in an urban area and have a shady backyard. Haven't been successful in growing much except weeds. Wondering about getting the soil tested before we do any planting this year. How would I go about that?

You may find test kits at your local store, or you can work through your county extension. They should be able to help you with the testing and interpreting the results. They may also be able to suggest plants that would do especially well in your particular situation. Their web site includes a link to contact information for each county.
