The Q&A Archives: specific fertilizer need of tropical plants

Question: What are the specific fertilizer needs of:
Asparagus fern, Aspidistra, bromeliad, Calathea,
Cholorphytum, Cissus rhombifolia. Thank you.

Answer: The bromeliad should have water in its cup (at the center of the plant at the base of the leaves, there is a depression that can hold water) all the time. Once a month you could fill the cup with a water and water soluble fertilizer solution. Mix the liquid fertilizer and water so it is a very weak solution, about 1/4 the usual dosage.

The other four will do fine with either a slow release granular such as Osmocote or a water soluble fertiliser formulated for foliage plants. Read and follow the label directions for how much to use. Fertilize from spring through fall, do not fertilize during the winter months. Enjoy your plants!
