I want to grow both Red Plums and Pear trees and have limited space. Are there any Red or other Plum and also Pear varieties that are self pollinating? If not self pollinating, what are possible choices for compatible trees? Thank you so much.

All pears need cross-pollination. But there's good news: most pears are available on dwarf or semi-dwarf stock so they won't take up too much room. In your gardening region, I'd recommend CLAPPS FAVORITE Medium to large, smooth, very uniform fruit, yellow-green often with attractive pale red blush. Flavor good, juicy, crisp, and sweet. Ripens well on the tree for fresh eating. Pick early for storage to prevent breakdown. Ripens late August. DELICIOUS - One of the best pears for the home fruit grower. Disease resistant. Pears have golden skin and white flesh. Ripens early September. Excellent dried.

As for plums, you'll get more fruit if you plant two different varieties, but the following are considered self-fruitful so if you have room for only one tree, choose between the two. BEAUTY: A bright red, medium sized fruit that has amber streaked flesh. The tree is said to be self fruitful. Ripens in early August. Dependable. It is fast growing and extremely productive.

HOLLYWOOD: Bears large reddish purple plums that ripen in mid-August. Plums are delicious fresh eating, freestone when fully ripe. Excellent for Western Washington. Apparently does not require cross-pollination.

Best wishes with your new fruit trees!
