My husband spreads the fireplace ashes (oak) around over our newly planted bulbs. Is this OK?

Wood ashes will change the soil pH over a period of time. If your soil is on the acidic side, you can use up to ten pounds per 1,000 square feet of garden area. If your soil is alkaline, you can use about three pounds per 1,000 square feet. Don't overdo or the plants will become unhappy. Spread the ashes in different parts of the garden throughout the year instead of just around the bulbs and everything should be okay.
