| we recently purchased our home and are trying to get our lawn in shape. we have more weeds than we do grass, there are also some dry patches with nothing. can you please advise what steps i take and when, to get a healthy green thick lawn? thanks |
| For the bare patches you may want to spot reseed this spring. However, late summer to early fall is really the best time to do extensive lawn repair or restoration. In the meantime, I would suggest you run some basic soil tests to check fertility and see if you need to lime to adjust the pH. This can be done now in preparation for more extensive work later. Correct mowing is also critical to lawn health. Mowing often enough to remove no more than one third the grass height at a time is really important to keeping the grass you do have as healthy as possible.(Twice a week in spring is often necessary.) Your local county extension should be able to help you with the soil testing and interpreting the results, suggest specific lawn grass varieties that do well in your local area, and assist in determining an overall maintenance plan suited to your yard.
