We are wanting to put up a row of bushes to block off a section of yard to hide a fenced in area for the dogs. What would be a good bush that is short and spreads horizontally? We leave in west tennessee just east of Memphis. Thank you.

You might consider evergreens such as including a euonymus such as Silver King, or a compact yew, or boxwoods, or nandina, or you might train a pyracantha along the fence (alhtough this last one has thorns.) Among deciduous shrubs you might consider some of the smaller growing varieties of abelia or barberry or even landscape roses from the Carefree or KnockOut series. Your local plantsman may also have suggestions based on a more detailed understanding of the planting area and your overall design goals.
