The Q&A Archives: putting lime on lawn

Question: How do you know when to put lime on your lawn

Answer: Abe,

Whenever the soil pH drops to 6.5 or below it will probably benefit from the addition of a little lime. This is generally not something we do for turf unless the pH gets really low, say below 6.0, and it needs to be accompanied by a number of soil aerations over time or the effect will only be at the soil surface rather than down into the root zone. If your soil is a typical east Texas sand your pH may be low. If it is typical Houston black clay it probably is already at a high pH level.
