Nandina tends to colonize an area by slowly spreading out. It's not quite as aggressive as bamboo but the original clump will get larger each year. If you plan on digging and dividing every 5 years or so, you won't need to confine the plant with a barrier. If you want to plant it and forget it, a barrier will keep it contained.
