Would a Southern magnolia would survive in this type of climate. If not, are there any suggestions for a tree comparable to the beauty of this type?

A Southern Magnolia wouldn't be happy in your region. Liriodendron (the Tulip tree) is a deciduous tree with saucer-shaped blossoms that look similar to Magnolias, and will grow in your area. Local nurseries should have what you're looking for.
