I need to hide a very ugly fence that my neighbor has installed. I want the plantings to be as low maintance as possible but at the same time cover up the fence. The fence is approximately 6 feet high.

Nandina (heavenly bamboo) is a low maintenance plant, as are Escallonia and laurel. All are evergreen and all will hide the fence, giving you some seasonal color as a bonus. You might find other ideas by cruising through the garden section of your local Home Depot.

Best wishes with your new shrubs!
