Squirrels, chipmunks and voles may all cause damage to bulbs. There are several strategies for protecting the plants. One is to use a repellent spray, these are sold at garden centers. Read and follow the label directions for application on re-applying it. Another is to cover the planting area with wire mesh to prevent the animals from digging. Finally, you might consider planting daffodils instead. The animals love dining on tulips and many other bulbs but seem to leave the daffodil bulbs alone.
