What do you add to sandy soil to make it better? |
Organic matter in the form of compost, aged manure, shredded leaves, etc. will greatly improve sandy soil, helping it to hold moisture and, as the organic matter decomposes, add nutrients to the soil. Start with 3-4" of organic matter and spread it evenly over your garden bed. Dig it in to a depth of about 8", plant your annuals and perennials, then spread another 2-3 inches of organic matter over the top of the bare soil. At the end of the gardening season, dig this into the soil as well. It will take several years, but the above process will eventually result in rich, loamy planting soil in your garden beds. Best wishes with your garden! |
