The Q&A Archives: Burpless Cucumbers

Question: How are burpless cucumbers created? What properties of the cucumber make it "burpless"?

Answer: Plant breeders take the best qualities of two plants and produce a new variety, called a hybrid. The bitterness (or burp producing quality) has been removed from burpless cucumbers through selective breeding. Burpless cucumbers have a lower acid content which makes them good for eating fresh, but not good for making into pickles.
