I need to kill a lot of grass to expand my vegetable garden. Is there a safe but fast way to do this without using herbicides?

Absolutely! The easiest way to accomplish this is to lay down a layer of black plastic (anchoring it to the ground in some way) and leaving it there. The sun causes the heat under the plastic to become so intense the grass underneath "cooks" and dies. (The grass also suffocates, and gets no water). This process works best when the weather is hot and the sun is at it's strongest. However, you can go ahead and cover the plot now and let the killing of the grass begin!
