A pepper tree (Schinus) is a good shade tree to plant in gardens in temperate areas like California. It's a native of Brazil and does best where winters are mild. Schinus trees flower and produce red berries that are sometimes sold as pink peppercorns. Many people have severe reactions after eating the berries, so sample with caution. The tree is not related to chile peppers, which are annual plants of the Solanacea family.
