Your zip code places you in USDA winter hardiness zone 5A, or the coldest part of zone 5. If you garden in an exposed and windy or rural location it may actually be as cold as zone 4. I would recommend you plant things considered reliably hardy into USDA winter hardiness zone 4 or colder (ie considered winter hardy to zone 4 or to a lower number) for this reason. Trees, shrubs and perennials are all rated for hardiness and their zones can be checked in a good reference book. In the meantime, you might find the following plant finder feature helpful. Enter the number 4 in the zone box to bring up plants rated hardy to that zone or colder.
