| I planted 2 trees last year and watered them almost everyday. I stopped for winter of course and am wondering when I should start watering them again. I also need to know if I need to put some kind of tree food in the ground to help them grow. |
| Most landscape trees and shrubs are happy with about one inch of water per week. The best way to apply water is to build a basin or watering well around the plant and fill the basin with water. Allow it to drain then fill it a second time. Once a week (twice if it's really hot) should suffice, beginning in early spring and continuing until late fall. Watering in this way concentrates the moisture over the root ball and allows it to trickle down, wetting the entire root mass. You don't really need to fertilize your trees unless the leaf color is poor or growth is slow. If this is the case, use a granular 8-8-8, broadcast beneath the canopy of the tree.
