| Anita, I apologize for this delayed reply to your gardening question and hope it is still helpful to you. If you can bring in some better soil say about 4 inches or more that would be best. Loosen the surface with a light rototilling and lay the sod. Then roll the area with a turf roller (available at rental places) and keep the area moist for a couple of weeks to allow the sod time to root in well. Thanks for the question.
