The Q&A Archives: Shade loving shrubs for zone 5A

Question: Looking for shrubs that flower that can live in the shade for zone 5A. Many thanks, Ann

Answer: For bright dappled light or with some direct morning sun, you could grow the white flowered Hydrangea arborescens such as "Annabelle." In a shady to partly shaded area you could also grow Fothergilla, Itea, and Calycanthus and although not a flowering shrub, the variegated forms of shrub dogwood can be very colorful in a shady bed. I hope this gives you some ideas.
