Answer: Even with the winter protection you provided, tropical hibiscus simply won't survive winters in Illinois. They are such beautiful plants that I'd recommend replacing your hibiscus - but this time plant it in a container so you can enjoy it outdoors all summer and then take it indoors over the winter months. These are vigorous plants under the right growing conditions so you can prune it back to a manageable size prior to taking it indoors and it will reward you with lots of new growth and flowers, too. In the spring, after the weather warms, you can take your plant back outdoors.
