Garden Planning - Knowledgebase Question

I just got a new house, How can I build a flower bed and plan some tree?
The back yard I have already have sod (Lawn grass), should I dig out grass and put down dirt to build up flower bed or vegetable garden?

I apologize for this delayed reply to your gardening question and hope it is still helpful to you. Add soil if the soil is shallow or if the area is low causing water to stand there after rains. Raised planting beds help such areas. The soil needs to have an inch or two of compost mixed in to make it better for growing beautiful flowers. You will want to remove the sod first before you bring in soil and flower to the bed areas.
