How can I tell if my garden areas get full sun or partial sun? I am usually not at home during the day to be able to tell? |
It would be best if you could check periodically during a day when you are home to get an idea of the sun and shade patterns. However, as a rule of thumb, an unobstructed open area will be in direct sun all day long and is considered full sun. Any spot with sun for at least six hours including the hour of noon is considered to be full sun. For foundation plantings, the south side of your house is considered full sun. The east side of your house will be in sun all morning and would be considered full sun to partial sun, because the sun is gentler in the morning. The west side of your house is considered full sun because it is in the more intense hot afternoon sun. The north side of your house is partial sun on the west end, partial shade on the east end, and full deep shade in the center where the sun never touches the ground. Overhanging trees and nearby buildings can affect the amount of sun that hits the ground so you need to take those into account as well. I hope this helps. |
