Margaret, I apologize for this delayed reply to your gardening question and hope it is still helpful to you. Crapes are flexible about that. I would feed them in spring and if they lack vigor again in mid summer. More important than fertilizer is maintaining the soil moisture to keep them from going into stress. Although they can take drought, they won't bloom as well. Mulches are also helpful as they deter weeds and grass from competing with the crape myrtle's roots. Thanks for the question.
