The Q&A Archives: Hostas

Question: Please help - I moved into my house seven years ago and now my hostas are monsters!!! Do I dig them up in the spring or fall?

Answer: Hostas can be dug and divided almost any time during the growing season, but early spring just as they begin to grow is a good time as is early fall. Keep in mind that they do grow to quite a large size and once they reach specimen size it is a shame to have to divide them, if you have space to accomodate them at maturity try to space your divisions accordingly.
