The Q&A Archives: How Do I Improve Fullness in Leggy Ilex Glabra Bushes?

Question: My Ilex Glabra bushes are about four feet tall but very sparse and leggy. Is there any way to get them to grow fullness at the bottom? Thanks.

Answer: This habit is fairly typical for Ilex glabra, unfortunately, especially if grown in a shady location. Shearing can help increase density at the base, but over time the natural shape is leggy and somewhat spreading at the top.
