| I bought a 1950 ranch house in August. My front yard gets all day sun, south facing. We totally ripped out all the really overgrown shrubs in the front yard and need to start fresh. The house's sidewalk pretty much goes down the front of the yard. The front yard is flat. Can you give me some ideas for what type of shrub, trees, perennials might work best in my front yard? I do like color and flowering shrubs. the house is in Pittsburgh, PA 15237. | There are many different plants you could use for full sun in your area. You might consider flowering trees such as modern disease resistant crabapples, Cornus kousa, Cercis candadensis, or Magnolia soulangeana for example. Flowering shrubs could include weigela, spirea, forsythia, lilac, and Hibiscus syriacus (rose of Sharon.) Evergreens might include juniper, arborvitae, yew, mugo pine, and if it is not too windy, boxwood and the blue hollies. Unfortunately we are not able to do designs in this limited email Q&A format.
