| Most evergreens prefer an evenly moist but well drained soil so would not do well in the location as you described it. The small leafed evergreen Ilex glabra or inkberry holly might work for you. It can be kept pruned or sheared to three or four feet tall. Another option, although deciduous, might be the shrub dogwoods such as Cornus sericea or Cornus alba. These twig dogwoods are cut back very hard every fall or spring and can thus be kept to a fairly short height, and they will grow in clay soil on the wet side.
