You can add sprinklers to your existing system by digging up the supply pipe and installing a riser and a sprinkler head. The hard part is digging up the supply pipe! You can determine approximately where it is by drawing an imaginary line between two existing sprinklers. If you want to extend your system rather than add a sprinkler head, you'll want to add some pipe at the end of the current system, or if it is already working at max, simply add a new zone, complete with new pipe and sprinkler heads. Helpful professionals at your local Home Depot can help you design the addition to your system and show you which parts you'll need to complete the job.

Best wishes with your project!
