The Q&A Archives: Marigold flowers wilt, turn brown

Question: I have a four-year-old peace lily ( Spathiphyllum spp. ) that consistently has burnt leaf tips. What's causing this? Andorra Pescio Carmel, IN

Answer: Your peace lily may be potbound or have a salt buildup problem causing the leaf tips to die back. If the roots are growing in a circle around the pot, prune off the biggest, fleshiest roots, leaving the small feeder roots. You can remove up to a third ofthe root system without harming the plant. Repot the peace lily in the same pot, add fresh soilless mix and time-release fertilizer, such as Osmocote 14-14-14. The best time for repotting and root pruning is spring, but if the plant is really suffering, anytime is okay. If there is white salt buildup on the soil surface, water the plant less frequently, but give it enough water to flush salts out of the soil.
