The Q&A Archives: Heat Resistent Plants

Question: I need a plant/shrub that is heat tolerant to go in a corner that is brick on two sides and gets a lot of sun. Would be next to boxwoods and would need to be tall-about 3-4 feet.

Answer: Based on your description this sounds like a very difficult spot for any plant. You might try something very heat and sun tolerant such as barberry, or possibly one of the new low maintenance landscape roses from the KnockOut series, or possibly one of the smaller ornamental grasses. Another option might be to place a birdbath or other sculptural piece in that corner and avoid planting in it. Your local nurseryman may have additional suggestions based on a more complete understanding of the growing conditions in that spot and your overall design goals.
